Jay Dobyn's... He's No Angel

Safe Call Now Supporter - Jay Dobyns

I want to introduce to you my dear friend Jay Dobyns, retired ATF Agent.  I’m fortunate enough know him and always enjoy speaking at conferences with him.  His story is remarkable and he’s lucky to still be on this earth.  Most people know him one way, I know Jay in a totally different way.  Today he is dedicated to serving others and is one of Safe Call Now’s biggest supporters.  The man helps us save lives!!!

Jay Dobyns is a federal undercover agent and a New York Times Best-Selling author. He achieved worldwide notoriety as one of history's most daring undercover operators during high-octane covert operations targeting the world’s most brutally violent criminals and organizations.

For over twenty five years, Jay successfully infiltrated and brought down scores of the deadliest criminals and illegal enterprises in existence. He operated amongst vicious street and prison gangs, gun running groups, drug trafficking organizations, bomb makers and home invasion crews. He routinely played the role of a shrewdly-calculating professional hit man during federal "murder-for-hire" investigations.

Jay is perhaps best known for his landmark infiltration of the notorious Hells Angels biker gang. He was the first-ever law enforcement officer to successfully defeat the gang’s multilayered security measures and become a full patched member (of the legendary Skull Valley charter), a fact that club’s leadership vociferously denies to this day.

A defense attorney once described Dobyns as:

"...a government-trained ‘Predator’ repeatedly sent on seek and destroy missions in search of drugs, guns and violence, with instructions to succeed at any cost and without regard for the agent himself or those he crosses paths with.”

Jay’s 2009 memoir, "No Angel: My Harrowing Undercover Journey to the Inner Circle of the Hells Angels" quickly became a New York Times bestseller that has been published in twelve languages and seventeen countries.

The Female Undercover Officer...

By Safe Call Now® President & Founder - Sean Riley

Some of my favorite conferences to speak at are the female undercover schools.  Why you ask?  Because I don’t have to fight through the testosterone, they call you on your crap and they’re much more engaging than their male counterparts.  The female UC’s are also faced with different challenges than their male counterparts too.  I often hear administrators say that the female UC’s are treated the same as men.  I don’t buy that for a second and administrators if that’s what you’re telling people, STOP!!!

Hollywood and television portray the female undercover officer in sexy lingerie, sipping high end liquor in very high class settings.  This could not be further from the truth.  It is down and dirty street level crime…  In the gutter with things you can’t even imagine.

Recently at one of these conferences, two separate schools were running at the same time separating the genders.  There’s a good reason for this, the females have different challenges to overcome and you need more time to concentrate on those challenges that would not be addressed in a joint conference.

At registration I overheard a male supervisor advise us that his female UC was unable to attend the conference because she was the only female in the unit and they needed her to stay behind and help the unit.  Really???  Are her male counterparts required to do the same???  I don’t think so because they were all at the conference.

The Godfather of Undercover Work...

Gayland, Sean and the famous Charlie Fuller

Over the last seven years I've had the honor to have an open invitation to speak at The International Associationof Undercover Officers conferences nationwide.  Charlie Fuller (my "Bo") has been a mentor to me and adviser on how to help the undercover officers when life goes bad for them and they require treatment.  Imagine a job where you get paid to drink, lie, drive cool cars and basically do whatever you want?  Not a bad gig... until you come home to the real world and deal with life.

One thing I've learned while training undercover officers and placing them into treatment… that to do well in the profession, you sometimes become the "lie".  Think about it?  In order to achieve the objective in whatever undercover role you adopt, you become an actor.  To stay alive you become adept at becoming a great role player.  If you get caught in a lie when undercover there is the potential that you may lose your life so you become an even better liar than those out there lying to you.  Getting confusing yet, it can be.  The healthy boundaries of life can start getting blurred and obliterated for the undercover officer.

Imagine if you will, being undercover in a role for a long period of time and all the things you despise about those that commit crimes and you start living in that world.  In order to be the best, you become them.  It happens far more often than you think.  Now do this for 10 or 15 years.  Once you become the role you play, your family doesn't recognize you anymore.  You are no longer the person you were.  Admiration and adulation from your bosses and even the bad guys becomes intoxicating and your negative behavior receives valued praise.  The "switch" begins.

No Angel...

By Jay Dobyns

As Jay Dobyns a.k.a. “Jay Bird” gets ready to present here in Las Vegas today, we’re very blessed that he speaks about Safe Call Now® and the help available for all first responders out there serving all of us nationwide.

"No Angel": My Harrowing Undercover Journey to the Inner-Circle of the Hells Angels:

A New York Times Best Seller book by Jay Dobyns:

Getting shot through the chest as a rookie ATF agent, bartering for machine guns, throttling down the highway at 100 miles per hour, and responding to a full-scale, bloody riot between the Hells Angels and their rivals, the Mongols...these are just a few of the high-adrenaline experiences Jay Dobyns recounts in this action-packed, hard-to-imagine yet true story of how he infiltrated the legendary Hells Angels.

Dobyns leaves no stone of his harrowing journey unturned. On biker runs and at gang clubhouses, between rides and riots, Dobyns befriends bad-ass bikers, meth-fueled "old ladies," gun fetishists, psycho-killer ex-cons, and even some of the "Filthy Few" - the elite of the Hells Angels who've committed extreme violence on behalf of their club. Eventually, at parties staged behind heavily armed security, he meets legendary members like Chuck Zito, Johnny Angel, and the Godfather of bikers, Ralph "Sonny" Barger.
